Notes: 1977 was the inaugural year. In 1974, Gordy Ainsleigh (CA) ran 23:42: in the Tevis Cup horse race over the
same route. In 1975, one runner attempted the race but did not finish. In 1976, Ken "Cowman" Shirk (CA)
ran 24:30: and was the only finisher. In 1977, the race for runners only was inaugurated on a different date, marking
the first race of this series. In 1980, 5 miles (8 km) was added to the course; an additional 6.5 miles (10.4 km)
was added in 1985. The original course was probably 88.5 miles at most. The course is mostly on trails with some
sections of dirt and paved roads. The course involves 17,040 feet (5193 m) of climb, and 21,970 feet (6696 m) of
descent. Thirty miles (48.2 km) of the course is above 7000 feet elevation (2133 m).
The 2008 race was cancelled due to forest fires.
