Notes: 1937 was the first year that this race was held on its present course which starts in Fort William (close
to sea level), ascends Ben Nevis from the northwest to the summit at 1343m, and returns to Fort William. The first
timed ascent and descent was made by William Swan who achieved a time of 2h41m on 27 Sep 1895. The first race was
held (under Scottish AAA rules) in 1898 with ten competitors and was won by Hugh Kennedy in 2:41. There were two
races held in 1903 and then none until 1937. The race is pretty much an open course race. The start/finish have
varied and the reported distance has also varied, from 14 miles in the early years to 10 miles since the 1980's
altho it is not likely that the actual course changed that much.
